We are Nova Scotians. Together we advocate for a Livable Basic Income through outreach, education, and informed conversation.
We believe it is a human right to have an income that meets our basic needs and allows everyone to live with dignity.
Who are we?
Poverty in Nova Scotia
Poverty is a persistent and unnecessary social ill in Nova Scotia that severely impacts the health and well-being of Nova Scotians. Our welfare programs are punitive and insufficient. Far too little non-market housing is available. Precarious part time, short term and low paying jobs abound causing many to live from pay check to pay check. Increasing automation threatens jobs, pandemics challenge our public health systems, fascism threatens our democracy, and climate change and environmental degradation highlight the critical need to transition to greener, more sustainable practices. These challenges must be met with new policies. A Basic Income Guarantee would be a cornerstone to a more just and equitable society. For more information please see the Principles of the Basic Income Guarantee we advocate for, BICN’s Basics of Basic Income document, and Coalition Canada’s FAQs, and Cases for Basic Income Series.
